Paris is an open-air museum and, depending on the neighbourhood, brims with true architectural gems that bear witness to the capital’s rich artistic past.

A little museum bearing witness to an artistic movement.

Renowned Dutch artist Ary Scheffer decided in 1811 to move to Paris and settle at 7 rue Chaptal (now number 16) in the capital’s fashionable Nouvelle Athènes neighbourhood. Born in 1795, Ary Scheffer was a fervent representative of the Romantic School, a so-called “total” artistic movement as it includes pictorial works, sculptures, architecture and, of course, literature.

Here Scheffer hosted such illustrious names as Delacroix, Chopin, Liszt, Marie d’Agoult, Rossini, Dickens, Tourgueniev and Pauline Viardot…

Following his death, Ary Scheffer’s property was sold to the State for a symbolic sum and initially housed a teaching and research center dedicated to the study of sounds and colours under the direction of Olivier Revault d’Allonnes. In 1982, the State handed over management of the building to the city of Paris, which opened an annex to the Carnavalet museum under the name of “Renan-Scheffer Museum”. The name was changed in 1987 to “the Museum of Romantic Life”.

Immerse yourself in an era in the romantic tea-room

The Museum of Romantic Life’s English-style gardens boast the renowned Rose Bakery tea room, open to both museum visitors and outsiders.

A little haven of peace decorated with elegant wrought iron chairs and offering a gourmet menu, this tea room is perfect for a romantic rendezvous or simply to meet up with friends.

Once you have had your fill of the scent of roses and the beauty of climbing flowers, the Rose Bakery tea room with its succulent pastries and savories are sure to get your tastebuds tingling all year round
