Discover the Saint-Gervais district - Paris 04

The Saint-Gervais neighbourhood is the 14th administrative district of Paris. Located in the 4th arrondissement, it lies between the Saint-Merri area (to the west), the 3rd arrondissement (to the north), the Arsenal district (to the east) and the Notre-Dame district (to the south).

In order to identify its precise delimitation, one must start with Rue de Lobau and go up to Rue des Archives, then turn right onto Rue des Francs Bourgeois. Once you reach the crossing with Rue de Turenne, you must turn right again to take it. Then, you have to continue by Rue Saint-Paul until you reach Quai des Célestins. After that, you have to go along the quays of the Seine to come back to Rue de Lobau. Note: the neighbourhood also includes part of Pont Marie and Pont Louis Philippe as well as Voie Georges Pompidou. The district has a surface of 42.2 hectares.

History

The history of this neighbourhood is partly linked to that of the Marais, since the Saint-Gervais district forms the southern part of this famous place. It should be noted that the Marais was originally a swamp. A religious order settled there in the 12th century. Then, as time went by, the area was, in turn, the residential location of nobles, then of workers and craftsmen and, finally, of many communities (mainly Jewish, Chinese and homosexual).

But that’s not all, because the current Saint-Gervais district also includes the former Saint-Paul and Saint-Gervais districts. The Saint-Paul district was built around the church of the same name (Saint-Paul-des-Champs Church) which was built in place of a small chapel (built in 632). Today, only a part of the wall of this church remains, as it was completely demolished in 1799.

Concerning the mound of Saint-Gervais, it was a small mound located on the right bank of Paris. The first dwellings were built there during the early Middle Ages (dark ages). Then, after some modernisation work (and especially the creation of Rue de Lobau, which was opened between 1850 and 1854), it became the neighbourhood we know today. This district is named after the martyrs Saint Gervais and Saint Protais, who died in 57 AD. (one whipped to death and the other beheaded). Their story is told in the Golden Legend of Jacobus da Varagine.
