The Saint-Ambroise district is one of the four districts of the 11th arrondissement of Paris, it is surrounded by the La Roquette and the Folie Méricourt districts. It is also close to the Marais district. The Saint-Ambroise district runs along the Rue Oberkampf and ends at the Père-Lachaise cemetery.

History

The Saint-Ambroise district takes its name from Sainte-Ambroise Church, a historical attraction in the district, which itself takes its name from Ambrose of Milan (Ambroise de Milan). It is the 42nd administrative district of Paris.

Cultural sites

  • Saint-Ambroise Church, Paris: with an architecture that blends neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic movements, the Saint-Ambroise Church and its two 68-metre-high bell towers proudly sit on Boulevard Voltaire. It has been listed as a historical monument in Paris since 1978.
  • Musée Edith Piaf: this museum is dedicated to the life and career of the famous performer of “La Vie En Rose”. A symbol of Parisian life, Edith Piaf lived in this small apartment which has now been transformed into a museum open to the public.
  • Atelier des Lumières: located at 38 rue Saint-Maur, this digital art centre opened its doors in 2018. Installed on the site of a former foundry, the place now offers immersive art exhibitions.
