Discover the Quinze-Vingts district - Paris 12

The westernmost district of the 12th arrondissement of Paris, the Quinze-Vingts district is the 48th administrative district of the city. It is located just above the Bercy district along the right bank of the Seine. It extends from Place de la Bastille to the intersection of Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine and Rue de Chaligny.

History

The Quinze-Vingts district takes its name from the Quinze-Vingts hospital located at 28 Rue Charenton, given this name because it had 300 (15 x 20) beds when it was created in the 13th century.

Cultural sites

  • The Gare de Lyon: built in 1855 and completed in 1900, the emblematic Gare de Lyon stands out with its high clock tower, a 67-metre belfry whose hands are 2.8 and 4 metres long. With more than 100 million passengers a year, it is the third largest station in Paris.
  • Viaduc des Arts: this former viaduct built in 1859 is today a prestigious showcase for French know-how and houses workshops for arts and crafts, including jewellery, theatre sets and contemporary furniture. It stretches along Avenue Daumesnil, from number 1 to 129.

Local landmarks

Located in the south-east of Paris, the Quinze-Vingts district offers a multitude of leisure activities and entertainment. Along the Seine, it offers a pleasant living environment and is just a stone’s throw from the lively streets of the capital’s 11th and 12th arrondissements.

 

  • Place de la Bastille: symbolic of the French Revolution, the square is located at the very end of the Quinze-Vingts district. In the middle of the square, the July column commemorates the Three Glorious Days.
  • The Bastille Opera: a modern opera house built by Carlos Ott and inaugurated in 1989 for the bicentenary of the Revolution. The great hall of the Bastille Opera has one of the largest capacities in the world.
  • Place d’Aligre: located in the middle of Rue d’Aligre, the square is best known for its market. Every day except Monday, antique dealers and greengrocers take over the square in the Quinze-Vingts district.
