The Place du marché de Sablonville (Sablonville market square) is located in the commune of Neuilly-sur-Seine, north-west of the capital. Located just north of Avenue Charles de Gaulle, the square is very close to the historical axis of Paris. This market square belongs to the Sablonville district, which represents one of the areas in the south-eastern part of Neuilly-sur-Seine, at the edge of the Ternes district in the 17th arrondissement.
This square also hosts a market that has been known as the “marché des Sablons” since the 19th century. It is one of the largest of the town’s three markets, with a large number of traders and visitors.

History

The history of the market square is closely linked to that of Sablonville. This district of the commune of Neuilly-sur-Seine takes its name from the sandy plain (formerly known as the «Plaine des Sablons “) and the housing estate that was created there from 1830 onwards.

The Plaine des Sablons underwent several notable historical events, such as the great Reviews of the Sablons during which Louis XV used this plain, starting in 1750, to review the French and Swiss guards that made up the garrison of Paris.

Another highlight of the district was the first potato crops of the agronomist and pharmacist Antoine Parmentier in 1787. Thanks to his research in agrobiology and the cultivated fields on the Sablons plains, many French famine victims could turn to this vegetable and no longer suffer from the lack of food.

Cultural sites

Musée Gaumont (Gaumont Museum): This museum, over 120 years old, was created to collect and preserve all the archives of the company. Since its creation in 1989 by Nicolas Seydoux, this venues has continued to keep content, whether cinematographic or photographic, and whether it is scripts, drawings or posters. The museum is mainly accessible for professionals but sometimes it opens its doors to visitors. Since 2006, a virtual version of this museum can be viewed.
The MJC: This youth and culture centre offers residents of the Sablonville district the opportunity to try out sports or creative activities, such as painting, yoga or classical dance.

Local landmarks

UGC: The UGC, or “Union Générale Cinématographique”, is one of the largest European film exhibition groups and ranks 2nd in France. Created in 1971, its head office is located in the Sablonville district.
RTL: The head office of this famous radio station is located in the Sablonville district since 2018, a few steps away from the Sablons market.
