Père Lachaise: a meditation district.

Located in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, Père-Lachaise is the 79th district of the French capital. It is limited to the north by Rue Ménilmontant, while to the south, the streets of Bagnolet and Pyrenees will allow you to reach the Charonne district. To the east, the long Rue Pelleport borders the district, and to the west, Boulevard du Ménilmontant and Boulevard Charonne will lead you to the 11th arrondissement.

History

The Père-Lachaise district was formerly a territory of Charonne and Belleville municipalities. The construction of the cemetery that gave its name to this section of the 20th arrondissement marked the creation of the district. Père-Lachaise, like the other districts of this arrondissement, was integrated into Paris in 1860. A popular neighbourhood during the 20th century, it underwent gentrification, which grew in importance between 2000 and 2010.

Cultural sites

Bellevilloise: Founded in 1877, this cooperative was intended to give modest people access to political education and culture. Today, the building offers more than 2,000 m² of land dedicated to art where concerts or other innovative artistic approaches are organized.
Rue Saint-Blaise: Near the Père-Lachaise cemetery, this street has a rural landscape rarely found in Paris. Part of this place has kept the pre-annexation atmosphere.

Local landmarks

Père-Lachaise Cemetery: Also known as the “cemetery of the East”, the Père-Lachaise cemetery is the largest cemetery in the capital with its 43 hectares. With no fewer than 3 million international visitors each year, it is the most visited cemetery in the world. The reason? Among the 70,000 tombs present, many personalities rest there, such as Edith Piaf, Rossini, Molière, Marcel Proust or Oscar Wilde.

Parks

Jardin naturel Pierre-Emmanuel: Created in 1996, this garden of 6,500 m² displays flora unknown to the general public. It is home to many indigenous plants, which makes it easier to maintain them in an environmentally friendly manner. Between the Père-Lachaise cemetery and the border separating this district from that of Charonne, this large meadow abounds in plants with a variety of scents. Beware! They are not all pleasant.
Campagne à Paris: The purpose of this housing estate was to provide access to suburban housing for people with modest incomes. Charming houses built during the 20th century stand in a peaceful silence. Some have their canopies visible, while others proudly display their roses or wisteria.
