Discover the Notre-Dame district - Paris 04

The Notre-Dame neighbourhood is the 16th administrative district of Paris. This 94 acre district is located in the 4th arrondissement.
Only the western border is a real Parisian street (Boulevard du Palais).

Otherwise, the neighbourhood is mainly bordered by the Seine. Indeed, the Notre-Dame neighbourhood includes the entire ÎIe Saint-Louis and a part of Île de la Cité, cut off at Boulevard du Palais. To the west is the 1st arrondissement, to the north, the Saint-Merri and Saint-Gervais neighbourhoods, to the east, the Arsenal area and to the south, the 5th arrondissement.

History

It is obviously easy to guess where the name of this neighbourhood comes from. It is home to the imposing Notre-Dame Cathedral, part of which burned down in 2019.

The whole history of this neighbourhood is linked to that of the cathedral. Built between 1163 and the middle of the 14th century, it has undergone several restorations over the centuries (the latest of which after the fire of 2019 which destroyed the spire and the roof).
The Ile de la Cité on which it was built is considered by many to be the birthplace of Paris. No Gallic remains have been discovered there. However, according to historians, a small Gallic tribe lived there around 250 BC. Known as Lutetia in Roman times, Paris went on to become the capital of France, and the island gained importance, becoming the seat of royal and episcopal power during the Carolingian period (between 752 and 987). Today, it is a major tourist attraction and home to administrative headquarters.

As for Île Saint-Louis, it used to be split in half, with Île Notre-Dame to the west and Île aux Vaches to the east. Originally uninhabited and mainly covered with meadows, it was completely transformed after the urbanisation project initiated by Henri IV and his son, Louis XIII (towards the end of the 17th century). Indeed, many private mansions were built on the site.

Cultural sites

Of course, the main landmark in the neighbourhood is the majestic Notre-Dame Cathedral. Classified as a historical monument in 1862 and registered on the World Heritage List in 1991, it was for a long time one of the most impressive cathedrals in the West. Before the fire, it was the most visited edifice in Europe (about 14 million visitors per year).

In addition to the famous cathedral, the Notre Dame area has many cultural sites and landmarks such as the Sainte-Chapelle de Louis IX built on the Île de la Cité in 1241. It houses the famous crown of thorns among other relics.
