Europe: a dynamic and cultural neighbourhood

The Europe neighbourhood is the 61st administrative district of Paris, annexed to the 8th arrondissement of the capital. Concentrated around Place de l’Europe, it is bounded to the north by Boulevard de Courcelles, which reaches Boulevard des Batignolles, and to the south, by Rue Saint-Lazare, which joins Rue Boétie. Rue Amsterdam marks the limits of the district to the east and Rue de Courcelles to the west.

History

Today, the Europe neighbourhood is the most exclusive residential area in the 8th arrondissement, thanks to its cultural history. Many painters from the Impressionist movement and literary men, such as Manet and Zola, lived in its Haussmann-style buildings to find inspiration. However, this neighbourhood was originally destined for an industrial objective. Parcels of land were bought to inaugurate the first railway line linking Paris to Saint-Germain-en-Laye. A concentrated subdivision around a large square was then built and the adjacent streets were given the names of major European capitals.

Cultural sites

The Europe District has many buildings that bear witness of the cultural richness once present in these places:

  • Musée Nissim-de-Camondo: Located near the Parc Monceau, this museum was built between 1911 and 1914 and preserved as it was. It now houses a wonderful collection of antique furniture and 18th century French artwork.
  • Saint-Augustin Church: Built by the architect Victor Baltard between 1860 and 1871, this worship place is located in the former neighbourhood of Petite-Pologne. Inspired by Romanesque art and Byzantine style, it is the first religious building to combine cast iron and iron. In the centre, you can see the organs of the famous “Charles Spackman Barker”.

Local landmarks

The Europe neighbourhood is a bustling crossroads with a very marked cultural footprint that attracts art lovers in all its forms. Many internationally renowned artists settled there to find inspiration.

  • Saint-Lazare station: A true symbol of modernity at that time, it was the very first station built to link Paris to Saint-Germain-en-Laye in 1837. Its current facade was designed by the architect Juste Lisch between 1885 and 1889, in an effort to welcome visitors to the 1889 Universal Exhibition. It was often represented in the pictorial works at that time.
  • The old house and workshop of Édouard Manet: the artist lived at 4, rue de Saint-Petersbourg from 1872 to 1878 and painted his famous painting “Le Chemin de fer” (The Railway), which depicts a woman and a little girl in front of Saint-Lazare station.

Parks

  • Parc Monceau: Covering an area of 8.2 hectares, this English-style park, inaugurated in 1861, inspired the canvases of Claude Monet. It displays a rotunda, an old pavilion, the “Naumachie” and numerous statues of famous writers and musicians for the enjoyment of visitors.
  • Square Marcel-Pagnol: Its name is a tribute to the Provencal writer Marcel Pagnol. Created by Jean-Charles Alphand, the father of green spaces in Paris, this park is home to the bronze statue of the poet Paul Déroulède, a fountain with a flowered basin and a playground.
