Discover the Charonne district - Paris 20

Charonne: the old wine village.

Charonne is the 80th district of Paris, located in the 20th, the last arrondissement of the capital. To the north, it is bounded by Rue Bagnolet, which separates this district from that of Père-Lachaise. To the south, the boundary is marked by Avenue Porte-de-Vincennes and Cours de Vincennes. To leave the district, one only has to cross Boulevard Davout (to the east), or Boulevard de Charonne (to the west).

History

Charonne was once a village of winegrowers with only about 800 inhabitants. Traders and inhabitants who would go to Charonne used to meet there to chat or play. The village became part of Paris in 1859.

Cultural sites

  • Église Saint-Germain de Charonne: A mixture of architectures from several different centuries (from the 12th to the 18th century), it is the only church, along with that of Calvaire-de-Montmartre, to still have a parish cemetery.
  • Pavillon de l’Ermitage (Hermitage pavilion): It is the last vestige of Bagnolet Castle, which was enlarged by the Duchess of Orleans. This part of the castle, built in 1723, was used as a shelter for the group of counter-revolutionaries who attempted to save Louis XVI from his execution on January 21, 1793.
  • Rue Saint-Blaise: The first section of this street did not experience the changes of the Charonne district, which gives an idea of what the old village looked like.

Local landmarks

  • Saint-Jean-Bosco Church: Considered one of the most achieved churches of the 20th century, it is dedicated to the founder of the Salesian congregation. Built in 1931, it is the 60th building born under the leadership of the Chantiers du Cardinal association. Although it is still little known, the church is a sacred place with a unique design: its mosaics, frescoes and stained glass windows give it a most original decoration.

Parks

  • Jardin naturel Pierre-Emmanuel: Composed of wild plants representing the natural environments of the Île-de-France region, this garden was established in 1996 and today has a surface area of approximately 6,500 m². Here, natural cycles take back their rights: maintenance is carried out with respect for the environment. The plants therefore develop independently in the wild. Benches have been installed for those who wish to enjoy nature, relax or read a book.
  • Jardin de l’Hospice Debrousse: Once engulfed in this garden, you can see the Hermitage pavilion. Since 1887, this haven of peace has housed a hospice for the needy elderly. The hospice thrived thanks to the donation of 6 million francs from Baroness Alquier Debrousse and her brother Jean Debrousse. The garden, meanwhile, was created in 1982 and today covers an area of 10,050 m².
