History

The Champs-Elysées section was first created in 1790. At that time, it was considered an administrative neighbourhood. After five years, it became part of the 1st arrondissement of Paris. It was bounded by half of the Seine’s right bank from Pont Louis-XVI continuing on to Passy barrier, then joining Roule barrier and then the part located on the right of the streets of Faubourg-du-Roule, Faubourg-Saint-Honoré, Royale, Place Louis-XV and ending at Pont Louis XVI.

The neighbourhood’s name comes from the name of the very famous Avenue Champs-Elysées. In Greek mythology, heroes rest on Champs-Elysées after their death. The first developments of the Avenue des Champs-Elysées began in the 18th century on the initiative of Marie de Médicis. She wanted to create a long avenue lined with elms and lime trees beyond Tuileries Palace, along the Seine. Many works were carried out there. It was towards the end of the 19th and 20th centuries that this avenue gained the importance it has today.
