Discover the Bercy district - Paris 12

Located along the right bank of the Seine, the Bercy district is the 47th administrative district of the city of Paris and belongs to the 12th arrondissement of the capital. Bordered by the Seine on one side and the Rue de Charenton on the other, it stretches from Rue Villiot to the Pont National.

History

Originally, Bercy was a separate commune. It was dissolved in 1859 and its land was divided between the towns of Charenton and Paris. Close to the Seine, the district of Bercy was a working-class district where goods transported by river arrived. It was greatly restructured in the 1980s.

Cultural sites

  • The Musée des Arts Forains: located in “Les Pavillons de Bercy”, the Fairground Arts Museum recreates a traditional fairground from the 1850s to 1950s. Its permanent collection includes the Museum of Fairground Arts, the Theatre of Wonder, the Venetian Salon, the Magic Mirror and the Green Theatre.
  • The Accor Hôtel Arena: the former “Palais Omnisport de Paris-Bercy” is a multi-purpose arena, best known for its programme of shows and sporting events. The venue plans to host basketball and judo competitions during the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
  • The Cinémathèque Française: often called the “Maison du Cinéma”, the French Film Library is the organization in charge of preserving French film heritage. Each year a director or artist is the subject of an exhibition, such as Tim Burton in 2012, which was the most visited exhibition there with 350,000 visitors.

Local landmarks

After it was restructured in the 80s and 90s, the district of Bercy benefited from modern buildings and new places of activity, much to the enjoyment of its inhabitants.

 

  • Bercy Village: this shopping and leisure centre opened in 2002. It has some thirty shops and restaurants, as well as a cinema. The open-air shopping centre is located at the gates of Bercy Park.

  • Parc de Bercy: built on the site of the former wine storehouses, Bercy Park covers 35 acres. The park is composed of three different gardens built in the 90s.
