History

Integrated into Paris in 1860, the administrative district does not have the same limits as those of the former municipality of Belleville. The latter was larger and extended further to the north of the 20th arrondissement, and about half of the current 19th arrondissement to the south. Some streets in the 10th and 11th arrondissements were also part of the former commune.

Local landmarks

  • Parc de Belleville: this hill was originally a very active wine-growing area, which was an advantageous location for the city. Numerous taverns and guinguettes were set up at this location. Thus, the famous “piquette” was one of the wines from the Belleville vineyards. Nowadays, this pejorative term has over time become synonymous with poor quality wine, whereas in the past it was simply used to refer to a young wine. Today, the vines are a reminder of the district’s past, while the unobstructed view allows you to see many cultural sites and buildings of the capital.
