Discover the Bel-Air district - Paris 12

The Bel-Air district is one of the four districts making up the 12th arrondissement of Paris and the 45th administrative district of the city. It is bordered by Boulevard de Picpus, the Bois de Vincennes and the commune of Saint-Mandé. In this aptly named district, you can enjoy some fresh air in one of the “greenest” parts of Paris, the Bois de Vincennes.

History

Part of the district originally belonged to the city of Saint-Mandé and was located inside the fortifications of the city of Paris when they were built in 1844. It was then attached to the capital by law on 16 June 1859.

Cultural sites

  • Palais de la Porte Dorée: listed as a historical monument, the Palais de la Porte Dorée located at 293 Avenue Daumesnil was built for the 1931 colonial exhibition. A symbol of art-deco architecture, it now houses the National Museum of the History of Immigration and the Paris Tropical Aquarium.

Local landmarks

The Bel-Air district is mainly made up of part of the Bois de Vincennes. The north of the district is quite working class while the south is more chic. Between the Bois de Vincennes and its cultural wealth, the Bel-Air district offers many family activities.

 

  • The tropical aquarium of the Palais de la Porte Dorée: with 250,000 visitors a year, the tropical aquarium is located within the exhibit hall.
  • Paris Zoo: located on the edge of the Bois de Vincennes, Paris Zoo, commonly known as the Vincennes Zoo, was designed in 1934 to supplement the wildlife collection of the Jardin des Plantes.

  • The Bois de Vincennes: a must-see place to stroll in the French capital, the Bois de Vincennes occupies a large part of the Bel-Air district. Famous for its Throne Fair, it offers many activities during the rest of the year, such as a boat trip on Daumesnil Lake or sporting activities.
  • The coulée verte René-Dumont: formerly called ” Promenade Plantée”, this linear park crosses the entire 12th arrondissement of Paris. In the Bel-Air district, it starts on Boulevard Picpus and ends on the edge of the ring road.
