Bagatelle Saint-James: peace and quiet in the heart of the city.

 

Located on the banks of the Seine southwest of Neuilly-sur-Seine, facing Ile de Puteaux, the Bagatelle-Saint-James district is nestled at the edge of Bois de Boulogne. Small in size, it stretches from Avenue Charles-de-Gaulle (in the north) to Boulevard Richard-Wallace (in the south). To the west, it follows Boulevard du Général-Koenig and, to the east, that of Commandant-Charcot, passing through Porte de Neuilly, Porte Saint-James and Porte de Madrid.

History

Founded by monks, the town of Neuilly-sur-Seine began to develop after the construction of a bridge across the Seine. In the 16th century, Francis I built a residence there, the Château de Boulogne. It then took the name of Château de Madrid (Madrid castle) before it was torn down during the Revolution.

The name Saint-James refers to Claude Baudard de Saint-James, a wealthy financier of the18th century, who built a luxurious house in the neighbourhood. The Bagatelle-Saint-James district was, from its beginnings, linked to nobility and luxury, which can still be found in its streets today.

Cultural sites

  • Bienheureuse-Isabelle-de-France Church: Opened in 1958, this modern church pays homage to Isabelle de France, the sister of Saint-Louis, who lived in the 13th century. Built in a very sober style, it presents geometric stained glass made by Pierre Chevalley.
  • Commander Charcot’s house: Built in 1813, it saw the birth of Jean-Baptiste Charcot, who became a famous explorer of the Polar Regions. His father was known in the medical community for his pioneering work in neurology.

Local landmarks

  • Maisons Jaoul (Jaoul houses): Built by Le Corbusier in the mid-1950s, the Jaoul houses were both classified as historical monuments in 1966. Despite them being private buildings, one can admire the use of the modular, a measuring system invented by the architect to better integrate man into his living space. The use of the vault and load-bearing walls is also noteworthy, as it constitutes a rare feature in Le Corbusier’s creations.

  • Parc de la Folie-Saint-James: The garden part of Folie Saint-James now covers 1.8 hectares (compared to 12 hectares originally).   • Parc de Bagatelle: Although it officially belongs to the 16th arrondissement of Paris, this park is widely frequented by the inhabitants of the Bagatelle-Saint-James district, which adjoins it.
