History

Sainte-Marguerite neighbourhood takes its name from Sainte-Marguerite Church it houses. Rue de Charonne, which borders the district, is one of the oldest streets in Paris. It contains a part of Faubourg Saint-Antoine known as Faubourg du Meuble, a Parisian landmark of wood and woodworking.

Cultural sites

  • Art Factory: this 200m² atypical loft hosts exhibitions of designers and graphic art. Built on the remains of Lavignes-Bastille gallery where Andy Warhol exhibited, the venue honours its artistic heritage.
  • Espace Hattori: this Franco-Japanese cultural centre is a museum dedicated to Japanese arts. Music, painting, sculpture or dance, it offers activities for both young and adults.
  • Sainte-Marguerite Church: located at 36 rue Saint-Bernard, the Latin cross church houses a large quantity of artwork, mainly paintings. Somewhat unknown, it was built by the parish priest of Saint-Paul, Antoine Fayet, in order to offer a worship place to the residents of Faubourg Saint-Antoine.

Local landmarks

Sainte-Marguerite neighbourhood is quieter than its neighbours in the 11th arrondissement. In spite of being a residential and familial district, it nevertheless offers several interesting venues, notably cultural and architectural.

 

  • Place de la Nation: formerly known as Place du Trône and then Place du Trône Renversé, it marks the border between the 11th and 12th neighbourhoods in Paris. It takes its former name from the fact that a throne was erected there in 1660 to welcome Louis XIV returning from his marriage with Maria Theresa of Austria to Saint Jean de Luz.
  • Passage Lhomme: this paved path full of vegetation will take you away from the vivacity of the 11th arrondissement. Located at the western end of Sainte-Marguerite neighbourhood, this open-air passage is open to the public all day long.

  • Square Raoul-Nordling: located in the south of Sainte-Marguerite Church, at 28 rue Saint-Bernard, the Square Raoul-Nordling, with its basketball pitches and other foosball tables, offers a perfect setting for sport and leisure activities, under the shade of Sainte-Marguerite Church.
  • Jardin Louis Majorelle: located at 30 rue de la Forge Royale, this garden was named after Louis Majorelle, a French cabinetmaker and member of Ecole de Nancy. It was created on the centenary of the artistic movement it celebrates.
